The Lightness of Being by melocopter The Lightness of Being by melocopter
This painting is about eating disorders. The scan is not good. It makes the oranges look neon.

Aw ♥ did you used that title basing in Milan Kundera's book?

Wonder if that could be Teresa ..

Yep, that's what it's from. I love that people read.

The expression on her face is great. Everything you did in this piece fits together so well. The colors, the figures, the meaning...incredible.

what color paint did u use for that?? its amazing
melocopter Featured By Owner Apr 19, 2007  Professional Traditional Artist
It was a yellowish underpainting with strokes of green made from ultramarine blue and cad yellow in the grass. The color palette is pretty basic, just cad yellow, cad red, ultramarine blue, black, white, and yellow umber I think.

Very creepy....considering these paitents actaully compare their ribs-to-sight ratio and cheer each other on when they "overcome" another diet-ahnialation (argh, so not spelled right)....
The imagery is very dead-on with the disorders themselves...very successful illustraion.

This is so clever and so scary...which is amazing considering at first look it seems so relaxed with the warm colours and the way her hair blows gently in the wind...just incredible

This is a truly amazing piece. I love the concept, and the colors are glowing, very moving.

ill23 Featured By Owner Jan 28, 2006
yeah sure. it wasnt an incrimination. just was amazed to see another picture of quiet the same impressed situation. and axactly the opposite of yours and the way around.
yours is more happy, much colour and bright ones andyou can see a girl. the other one digital art, a boy is sitting here and the colours are more darker...

just was surprised, like a déjavu or something... a little bit strange, you know?! -_-

but great works both and don't stop with doing arts!!

this series is amazing- i've worked alot with the disorders displayed, and have been through a few years living with chronic depression and OCD. you've displayed them utterly perfectly, did you research them? because it seems no one can understand the illnesses and draw them as you have without know anything about it
melocopter Featured By Owner Jan 2, 2006  Professional Traditional Artist
Hey thanks very much for the complement. I spent a few months researching. I was originally going to do 10 paintings, but after 5 I found it just wasn't in me. One of the reasons I wanted to do the series is to educate people about the illnesses, as there are a lot of misconceptions about them.

This series of pictures is very clever. The themes are worth bringing to public attention, and the use of colour is lovely and encourages people to view the pictures. Very nice work.

Brilliant! I saw a book recently that was titled "Real Women Eat". People have no clue what's healthy anymore. It seems as though the popular diets only screw with brain functions. I'd rather have fat smart people, than thin confused people. I have a lot to say on this subject, but I'll spare you. I like that you have the girl by herself. Most people in this situation end up with few friends, and those few are just as shallow and confused.

Love the orange ;)
melocopter Featured By Owner Aug 12, 2005  Professional Traditional Artist
Thanks (your name)! ;)

I think the problem is a bit deeper than that. I know women who have struggled with eating disorders that are definitely not shallow or confused people. I don't think anyone wants to be considered unattractive, and some women gradually become addicted to unhealthy dietary behavior that starts in little doses.

an amazing and fabulous piece of art :)

Its a wonderful painting with a beautiful message. The title says so much to me. Portraying these messages with child-like images is so appropriate. Its innocent yet very mature. I hope this makes sense. Your art just makes perfect sense to me.

Thanks eliq, I'm glad it makes sense to at least one other person. Thanks for your other nice comments also.

Before I read about this piece I couldnt help to think back when I was a child
and I realy didnt have a concept of body weight. Children often are so full of
energy Iam allways amazed that gravity can even keep them tied to the earth.

Thats subjectivity for you thou. Hmm if the oranges are on sticks in the far off
what are the green things on sticks. Iam pretty sure the answer will be trees, butt then again I thought the oranges where tree's and the fall and the green
tree's where spruce's witch dont change color. Ah well later.
